ESCAPE FROM REALITY, 2024
Synthetic Polymer Paint on Linen

Through the careful orchestration of colour, form, and geometry, escape from reality, examines how visual language and aesthetics can construct a suspended experience; one that momentarily displaces us from the rhythms and repetitions of everyday life. Dynamic geometric forms intersect and unfold across the picture plane, while layered, shifting fields of colour generate a sense of movement that is both immersive, destabilising and kaleidoscopic.
Within this constructed field, the work engages a fundamental human paradox: the desire to escape reality while remaining inherently tethered to it. The painting becomes a site where sensation, perception, and psychological projection converge. Through bold delineations of space and an expanded approach to pictorial structure, Coulter extends painting beyond the purely aesthetic, positioning it as an experiential framework. In doing so, she challenges the notion of abstraction as purely non-objective, instead proposing that memory, time, and emotion are inseparable from its formal language.
