In seeking out variable and unconventional spatial conditions to operate as painting supports, Coulter’s Spatial Deconstruction #4 (Vortex) emerged in direct response to the site’s under-stair architecture and its shifting interplay of natural and artificial light.
The work embodies a compression of gesture, time, and material restraint—marking the only instance within the Spatial Deconstruction series in which Coulter employed just three colours.
This reduction amplifies the spatial and optical tensions at play, positioning the work as a pivotal experiment within her ongoing investigation into how painting can inhabit and reconfigure architectural space.
