SUPERIMPOSITION
May 03 to May 24, 2025
James Makin Gallery, Melbourne
For her latest body of work, Coulter explores the concept of superimposition, in her practice, through both painting and sculpture. Layering and flattening spatial propositions, through a process of drawing, and collage, the artist deconstructs and reconstructs line, colour and form across the two dimensional surface of the canvas. Simultaneously, whilst flattening spatial forms into two dimensions, she also constructs from her imagination, tangible notions of space into three dimensions. Envisaging forms that hover, and balance in conversation with her paintings.
With a practice spanning more than two decades, Coulter’s work explores the intersections of architecture, sculpture, and painting. She has developed a bold abstract language and a distinctive colour palette, which is applied seamlessly across painting, sculpture, site-specific installation and public art. Working within the genre of hard-edge abstraction, her work challenges perception by playing with colour, geometry and form.
Coulter holds a Master of Contemporary Art from the Victorian College of the Arts, (2015), as well as degrees in Built Environment (2000) and Visual Arts (1998) from the Queensland University of Technology. Coulter has held over 18 solo exhibitions, participated in over 40 group exhibitions and completed over 30 site-specific installations, including major public art commissions for Melbourne Metro Tunnel, Coffs Harbour Cultural Centre and Shepparton Art Museum. Her work is in collections such as Artbank, ANZ Fine Art Collection, Footscray Community Centre, QUT Art Museum, City of Melbourne and St John of God Health Care, as well as private collections in Australia and internationally.
